In the “present” of the novels, he’s weak and not that impressive at all.But nevertheless, most of the story is his story, so your point still stands. I don’t think it can be even argued that he’s not a Mary Sue. The only argument that people make is that he’s an unreliable narrator and maybe he’s exaggerating his skills. But at the end of the day, the books are over 1000 pages at this point and we have yet to find his first flaw other than maybe someday he will not succeed.
